The story of Languissan
The story of Languissan carries on and is renewed with the acquisition of the estate in 1919 by the Sibille family. The fourth generation, represented today by the vigneron Arthur Sibille, perpetuates the family tradition.
The wines reflect the story and varied passions of the Sibille family members, who have succeeded one another at the head of the estate.
1919
LUCIEN SIBILLE
Notary of Libourne's town, he saw many properties for sale on his desk. Nevertheless, it was the charm of Languissan that inspired him. He decided to acquire it in 1919.
- ANECDOTE -
It was before Mr. Lucien Sibille, notary of Libourne, that the donation-sharing of Château Angélus took place on June 10, 1942, to the four children of Maurice de Boüard.
Lucien's sketch was used on the Cheval de Languissan bottle.
A PASSION FOR DRAWING
Passionate about drawing and painting, Lucien puts the diverse Languissan’s landscapes and activities down on paper.
1950
JACQUES SIBILLE
Son of Lucien Sibille, he took over Languissan in the 50s.
Horseman and wine merchant in Libourne, he decided to explore the viticultural potential of Languissan's terroirs. Thus, 5 hectares of vines were planted on the hillsides, and horses were brought in to occupy the formerly cultivated meadows.
Languissan, the home of two enthusiasts
A PASSION FOR HORSES
While Lucien drew the horses, Jacques enjoyed riding them, so he could appreciate the horse's power and complexity.
He took advantage of Languissan's territory to ride and share this passion with his five children.
A PASSION FOR GREYHOUNDS
Yvonne Sibille, Jacques' wife, favored the finesse and elegance of the Greyhound more, particularly the
Saluki breed.
So she bred greyhounds, creating a new line called Djain eventually.
1988
ARNAUD SIBILLE
Arnaud, the youngest of five siblings, decided to take over Languissan.
He cultivated 9 hectares on two distinct terroirs: clay-limestone soils with a large limestone vein, and gravelly soils on the heights of Croignon.
The blend of these two terroirs brings balance to the Château de Languissan cuvée.
Not just a winegrower, he also developed the wines and began to gain recognition in France and Belgium.
SHARING TOWARDS THE FOURTH GENERATION
Over time, Arnaud passed on his passion for vine-growing to his youngest son, Arthur.
- ANECDOTE -
At just six years old, Arthur preferred working in the vineyard rather than going to school.
Wearing his pijamas and a pair of boots, he got to work!
2019
ARTHUR SIBILLE
At the age of 22, Arthur takes over the estate of 9 hectares at the time.
Today, Arthur cultivates 23 hectares at Languissan. It selects limestone and gravelly soils over the years, mostly at an elevation of 100 meters.
On his turn, he refreshed Languissan's image by redesigning the wine packaging and introducing two new cuvées: Le Lévrier and Le Cheval, which highlight the Languissan story and terroirs.
